1910

Avery

The 1910s men's silhouette was very slender in nature. The clothing fit very closely to the body in order to create a thin streamline shape. The vests from this period were high cut on the chest leaving little space between collar and the top of the vest. The front and back of the Avery vest are stitched in a complementary medium brown, linen-rayon or in a matching dark brown, wool gabardine. The inside of the vest is lined in brown rayon taffeta. It has six buttons, widely spaced, to secure the front. The Avery has functional single-welt pockets and a tie in the back to cinch in at the waist.

The Avery shirt has been modified from an existing vintage pattern from the period. The length of the shirt was shortened by 12 inches. The shirts were made longer at this time because they served also as underwear. The front shirt-tail would be tucked between the legs and pull up over the buttocks. The back shirt-tail would then be slid over top of the front and pull between the legs and held at the waist at which time the trousers would be pulled over top of the shirt to secure the placement of the shirt covering the groin area. As contemporary men wear underwear, we have taken upon ourselves to reduce the length to be practical for the modern man. This pattern has a very high collar stand with set in collar. This dress shirt in creme and blue pinstriped cotton does not open completely in the front. It has a slit-front with button plackets that are also repeated in a smaller scaled above the cuff. The high, shallow yoke is shaped in a Western style "v". The shirt front features small patch pocket set high on the chest. The collar and cuffs are stitched in a white cotton poplin.

The trousers are stitched in a dark brown, wool garbardine. They are flat-front with narrow, straight-legs. The front of the trousers have not only cut-away pockets but also a small double welt watch fob pocket that is a miniature version of the pockets found at the back of the pants. The trousers are worn higher than modern pants and the rise is much longer.
